For a long time I had detailed descriptions of the compatibility between the twelve zodiac signs on my website. I even gave them stars. The relationship between Aquarius and Cancer was given one star, three stars between Aries and Capricorn and five between Virgo and Capricorn.
When I looked at the traffic on my website, it was clear that most of my visitors wanted to know something about their love life and especially their compatibility with their real or hoped-for partners. Although I was grateful for this traffic, it seemed to be out of balance and not reflecting what I wanted to focus on. I have therefore changed the website and removed all pages about zodiac signs and compatibility.
That doesn't mean that I'm not interested in zodiac signs and romance. Far from it. In the mid-1990s, I was a co-author of a book called Sex, stars and seductionI'm afraid it's out of print long ago. The book was full of information about the interaction between the twelve characters, and I really believe that I know what I'm talking about in terms of astrology and love.
Nevertheless, it is important to put zodiac signs in perspective. Before the 20th century, astrologers did not categorize people by their zodiac signs, and certainly did not use them to assess romantic compatibility.
Just because a technology has little or no tradition doesn't mean that it is irrelevant. By comparing the zodiac signs of two people, you get valuable information about the nature of their relationship. However, you should be aware that compatibility with zodiac signs is unlikely to indicate whether a relationship is working or not.
Zodiac compatibility is all about angles. The twelve signs of the zodiac are at different angles to each other, and some angles are easier than others. These angles increase by 30 degrees because the zodiac circle is 360 degrees and 360 divided by 12 30. So we have the sequence 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180.
The sign pairs are as follows:
0 degrees: Aries-Aries, Taurus-Taurus, Gemini-Gemini, Cancer-Cancer, Leo-Leo, Virgo-Virgo, Libra-Libra, Scorpio-Scorpio, Sagittarius-Sagittarius, Capricorn-Capricorn, Aquarius-Aquarius, Pisces-Pisces.
30 degrees: Aries Pisces, Aries Taurus, Taurus Twins, Gemini Cancer, Cancer Lion, Leo Virgo, Virgo Libra, Libra Scorpio, Scorpio Sagittarius, Sagittarius Capricorn, Capricorn Aquarius, Aquarius Fish.
60 degrees: Aries Aquarius, Aries Twins, Bull Fish, Bull Cancer, Gemini Lion, Cancer Virgo, Leo Libra, Virgo Scorpio, Libra Sagittarius, Scorpio Capricorn, Sagittarius Aquarius, Capricorn Fish.
90 degrees: Aries Capricorn, Aries Cancer, Taurus Aquarius, Taurus Lion, Gemini Pisces, Gemini Virgo, Cancer Libra, Leo Scorpio, Virgo Sagittarius, Libra Capricorn, Scorpio Aquarius, Sagittarius Fish.
120 degrees: Aries Sagittarius, Aries Lion, Taurus Capricorn, Taurus Virgo, Gemini Aquarius, Gemini Libra, Cancer Fish, Cancer Scorpio, Leo Sagittarius, Virgo Capricorn, Libra Aquarius, Scorpio Fish.
150 degrees: Aries-Virgo, Aries-Scorpio, Taurus-Libra, Taurus-Sagittarius, Gemini-Scorpio, Gemini-Capricorn, Cancer-Sagittarius, Cancer-Aquarius, Leo-Capricorn, Leo-Pisces, Virgo-Aquarius.
180 degrees: Aries Libra, Taurus Scorpio, Gemini Sagittarius, Cancer Capricorn, Leo Aquarius, Virgo Fish.
The starting angle is Zero degrees. In other words, where two characters are the same. For example, a relationship between two tauren or two twins. Astrologers generally consider this a stroke of luck. Two people with the same zodiac sign often have a similar outlook on life, and the mutual chemistry can be very convincing.
However, it is possible that the strong compatibility is too good. The couple could get in each other's way and cramp each other. If the relationship is heterosexual, the man can attract the woman because he reminds her of her father. That may not always be healthy.
The next angle is 30 degrees, and this describes two characters that are next to each other. Like Aries and Bull or Leo and Virgo. At first glance, two characters lying side by side do not get along very well, as these characters will always be very different. In practice, 30 degree relationships often work well, and this could have something to do with the fact that the planets Mercury and Venus are never too far from the sun.
So many people with the sun in Leo will have Mercury or Venus, or both in the following sign of the Virgin. As a result, many Leos can build excellent relationships with virgins.
Probably the best angle 60 degreeswhere the characters are two apart. For example Aries-Gemini or Virgo-Scorpio. There is a general sympathy between the two signs, but they are sufficiently different not to tread on each other's toes. So if you're looking for a long-term relationship with minimal deterioration, this may be the right combination.
Characters that are 90 degreesapart are often strongly drawn to each other, although their differences tend to outweigh their similarities. There could be passion, but there could also be many arguments.
An example of a 90-degree relationship is that between Bill and Hillary Clinton. He is a lion, she is a scorpion.
Relationships between characters that are 120 degrees apart can be very harmonious. Things are going smoothly and there is a natural understanding between the two parties. This is because characters that are 120 degrees apart have the same element. Taurus and Capricorn are both earth signs, Libra and Aquarius are both air signs.
If there are signs 150 degrees Other than that, they have nothing in common, all things are the same, and it's probably a combination to avoid. Although it doesn't seem to bother Barack and Michelle Obama, both lion and capricorn.
The most interesting couples are those who are 180 degrees a part. The two signs are on opposite sides of the zodiac, and there may be an obsessive chemistry.
Just because two people are drawn to each other doesn't mean that they should have a relationship. The 180-degree combination can be stormy and even self-destructive.
The criminal duo Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow - better known as Bonnie and Clyde - had their zodiac signs 180 degrees apart. Bonnie Parker was a Libra, Clyde Barrow an Aries. Their relationship was dynamic and exciting, but ended in a hail of bullets.
This is of course an extreme example. 180 degree relationships don't have to end badly, but there is a basic tension that could have explosive results.
I have now covered the underlying structure of zodiac compatibility. It is clear that the zodiac approach to relationships is very general and is hampered by the fact that other factors such as the moon, Venus and Mars are not taken into account in the horoscope.
Under these circumstances, you should avoid being amazed or disappointed by the zodiac compatibility. If you are an Aries and you are crazy about someone who is an Aries, do not think that you can have a happy relationship with him just because you have the same zodiac signs. On the other hand, if you are a lion and have just discovered that the man or woman of your dreams is a fish, do not cry to sleep desperately!
Instead, consider zodiac compatibility as a way to give yourself additional information. It can provide insight into the strengths and weaknesses of a particular relationship and give you guidance on how best to interact with your partner.
Given the general nature of this type of astrology, I would strongly recommend that you do not accept or reject someone just because they have the "right" or "wrong" star sign.
