I have been a practicing astrologer for over 16 years and specialize in astrology compatibility. Since I am a bit enthusiastic about technology, I largely avoided the Internet most of the time. However, all good things must come to an end, so I'm here now an avid online reader and writer. If time permits, I read and answer questions in various relationship astrology forums. I inevitably read topics that look like this:
I am a lion, am I compatible with an Aquarius?
Answer 1 - yes!
Answer 2 - no! I am a lion and I have an appointment with an Aquarius. We broke up.
Answer 3 - Relationship astrology is stupid. I spent 172 hours researching that every single combination of sun signs is divorced.
Any of these answers are wrong, but usually people will agree. In forums where votes are cast, one of these answers is usually chosen as correct and filed for future generations of questioners.
So what's going wrong here?
Whenever and wherever astrology compatibility is discussed on the Internet, there seems to be an assumption that sun signs are the key to astrology. I suspect that this is mainly due to the desire to simplify, rationalize, and condense everything. However, astrology is an issue where simplification often causes problems.
The bad reality is that people are much more than just their sun sign. If you want a "real" answer to an astrological question, you need real astrological reading. Getting past sun signs is useful to get a rough idea of what to expect, but there are many other planets that can override the properties of sun signs and trample. Every person and birth certificate is unique.
This has led to an interesting situation in which 80% of all information about relationship astrology on the Internet is probably fundamentally wrong. To qualify this metric, the information would be correct if sun signs could be viewed in a vacuum. In practice (and people ask such questions to make real-life decisions, not as a hypothetical exercise), it's just not that easy.
An interesting side effect of this seems to be a small army of Internet astrologers in the armchair who distribute packages of neat information on all aspects of sun signs. Why are you doing that? Because the concept of keywords means that a potential visitor is not looking for "Aquarius sun, lion moon, ram march, etc." will search - he will search for "Aquarius" - and woe to any article that dares to lose focus by leaving the subject with qualifications. Anything that is more complex causes the browser's back button to be pressed, quite quickly.
Fair enough, maybe this happens in all subjects. Education is clearly led by students on the Internet, and educators tell them what to ask and not what they need to know. Search engines effectively force websites to satisfy the need for instant gratification.
The problem for astrology is that this obsession with sun signs affects the credibility of the subject. People rightly say: "Wait a minute, I'm a lion and don't get on with Sagittarius! This astrological stuff is worthless!" Are professional astrologers to blame? Yes we are. Because nobody else would read our articles! However, it would be fairly easy for astrologers to put a disclaimer or warning when answering posts or writing articles, and maybe that's the solution?
